Yıl 1993, yer Amerika... İki kafadar, Alan Sparhawk ve Mimi Parker, bir tür müzik yapma girişiminde bulunuyor. Daha sonra onlara katılan Steve Garrington ile birlikte grup bugünkü hâlini alıyor. Kariyerlerinin daha 2. yılında, 1994, piyasaya öyle bir albüm sürüyorlar ki; üzerinden yıllar geçmesine rağmen her dinleyişte "Ben az önce ne dinledim?" diyecek kadar bir şok etkisi bırakan, 11 şarkı ama 11'ine de derin anlamları sığdırmış, grubun başyapıtı diyebileceğimiz bir albüm: I Could Live in Hope. Şarkılar sanki birileri beğensin kaygısı güdülmeden, grup üyelerinin sırf kendilerinin dinleyeceği nitelikte yazılmış ve bestelenmiş gibi, sözler öylesine kısa ve vokaller öylesine durgun.

Bu albümü benim için en özel yapan detaylardan biri, karanlık bir dönemimde keşfedip bana omuz olmasıydı. Sonraları ilham kaynağım oldu. Daha sonra ise sığınmaktan çekinmeyeceğim bir gezegen. Kafamın içi gibi bir albüm olarak nitelendiriyorum ben.
